STRECKFUS IDEALS
Courtesy to passengers is the first consideration on the Streckfus Steamers. All employees and officers of the Line are instructed to give careful consideration to the needs of passengers. The utmost safety is likewise assured those who ride on Streckfus Steamers. Every officer of the crew is a U. S. licensed riverman and the steamers have been subjected to rigid examination by U. S. Government Inspectors at regular intervals. Everything for the comfort and safety of passengers has been done. It is the aim of the Streckfus Line officials to furnish clean, healthful recreation on fine, up-to-date steamers and no expense is spared to supply the best of everything. THE STEAMBOAT BATTLE AT MEMPHIS
One of the most bloody naval battles of the Civil War occured, not on the open sea, but on the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tenn., June 6, 1862. Early in the morning of that day the Federal Fleet of powerful ramming steamboats and heavily armored gunboats engaged and decisively defeated a similar fleet of Confederate River Vessels, destroying all but one of them. Altogether some 17 were engaged in the battle. Many historians consider this battle the turning point of the Civil War, because it broke the hitherto tight Confederate control of the Mississippi. THE STEAMBOAT "ORLEANS"
On January 12, 1812; the first steamboat to reach New Orleans, the Pittsburgh-built stern-wheeler "Orleans," docked at the foot of Canal Street, completing a weird voyage of two months and 20 days, during which the little vessel was beset by a comet, earthquake, flood, fire, plaque and hostile Indians. The boat was built, owned and operated by Nicholas J. Roosevelt, ancestor of two Presidents. THE RECORD OF SOME FAMOUS TRIPS FAST TIME ON THE WESTERN WATERS
